This lecture will discuss some of the ways in which we might attempt to make sense of Kurt Schwitters' Merz collages - by situating them in their varying stylistic, biographical, cultural and chronological contexts, and broadly understanding them as expressions shaped by the artist's personal situation in place and time.
You are cordially invited to attend an Informal reception with drinks and a light snack in the Foyer (6.15 - 7.00pm). The lecture will commence at 7.00pm sharp.
The lecture is in honour of the memory of Professor Nigel Whiteley who was, until August 2010 Professor of Visual Arts at LICA the Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts, University of Lancaster.
Nigel was a great supporter of the Kurt Schwitters Merz Barn project.
